Why bent 16 sided instead of just curved in a round cone shape? Uniformity: for round turrets roof caps it is difficult to get this thick copper to bend around just right near the peak in a uniform curve. I have found that it works best to make these with 16 bends in stead for a good stronger uniform faceted look. Much like the cut of a diamond. With this being the crowning jewel on their house our clients have been very pleased with the results. A few clients were nice enough to send photos of their turret roof cap installed for us to show you here, so you will have a much better perspective of how it would look. It still seems to look plenty round and rather regal looking with the faceted appearance. Better Strength: Each bend helps to add strength to the floppy flat copper sheet metal we start with. Making it more dent resistant. It is known in the sheet metal business that the sharper the bend the more strength is added to stiffen up the metal. The chimney cap I make are a good example. An 8 sided roof cap for example has stronger corners, but there is also twice as much flat space between bends. The raised corner caps are even that much stronger again, but are harder to form and require more copper. I have not found that more than 16 bends would be an asset, but I have made 1 cap with 18 sides just to match their turret. Better Look: Asthetics is not something I could argue, but I think this looks more interesting than just a simple cone shape. More like the fassets of a diamond. Note: remember that you can click on each pictures shown to read more and get a better look at each cap. I could add more current images here, but there is already so many here it would just bog down your browser even more. Rest assure that we are still quite active with these sort of projects. I have been uploading more of our more current projects on my Facebook company profile photo albums. |
