Marinick wood Roof Cap Model

Here is a roof cap made for our client Bill & Sandra Good in Castlegar BC Canada. I made up this altered image to show them kind of what their house would look like with the roof cap style and size they had asked for. The later decided to go with an orphaned roof cap with raised corners and flame style tails that they could get for 20% off, especially since it happens to be about the right size and angle for their turret.

It has the 8 wood support blocks under each tail with stainless steel screening for a hidden roof vent. They also they help give the fancy flame style tails a more noticeable look after they had tarnished.

Here is all 8 sides of this large roof cap base section drawn out on the copper sheet before getting cut out with the flame style tails.

Their turret roof has a pitch of 24/12. I went to extra trouble to make this roof cap all in one single piece, so there is only one seam in the back, but to do this I could not fit all the tails on this 3' wide sheet of copper. I felt the advantage of fewer seams was a lot better than having all the tails seamless. This should not be noticeable once mounted 3 stories high and tarnished a few months later.

Here is the bottom section of this roof cap cut out and ready for assembly.

I had to cut an octagonal shaped sheet of plywood to rest this cap base on and set in on a stool, since these tails would be far too fragile to hold the weight of this. You can see where I finished off the 3 tails that were missing.

You can see the single seam this has that will be hidden from sight towards the back of the house.

This shows the top of the base cap made to hold the finial support pipe firmly in place with this wood block.

I decided to build an inner support cone to make sure this would be very strong and water tight for the harshest of Canadian Winters.

Here is the outer steeple cone being built and attached.

I then covered this with the matching steeple cone that is riveted to the base cap through the tab bent under the bottom edge of the steeple cone. This steeple cone also is to hold the top of this finial support pipe in place through the harshest wind storms.

I then added the wood support blocks and stainless steel screen that will allow for the roof venting.

This turret roof cap is 30"+ wide with these flame style tails dropping below that. It was built with raised and spiked corners with one seam on the back side, built to fit an 8 sided 24/12 pitch roof. This 40" tall Morgana style finial set in place.

The normal cost for this from the weight of the 20oz copper w/o finial of 35.4# X .8 = 28.32 sq' X $40:
$1,132.80 - copper
+ $125 - weathervane or finial support pipe
+ $ 80 - painted wood spacer blocks w/SS screen
+ $255 - 40" Morgana finial (shown) w/solid brass rod (includes 15% discount)

They they also got a 20% discount for choosing an orphaned roof cap we had in stock, so in all they saved $405.16 in all.

Here is a couple shots I took for the client to see what this roof cap would look like with these 2 different size Morgana finials set in the finial support pipe. that way they could better decide what size they felt would look best.
