These solid 20oz copper turret and gazebo roof caps were custom made for our clients named Mike & Chris Allison in Ely, Nevada for their 4/12 pitch octagon roofs.  These roof cap were made 44" wide across the base with a safety hem bent under the bottom edge for strength and better handling during installation. The wood mounting rings were custom cut and assembled to attach on the roof raising the caps up to allow for the roof venting under the caps.

Building the Raised Corner Copper Caps

The client had originally asked for a quote for caps with the venting under the edges of the caps, but when I tried to bend the raised corner design in this seamless cap I realized it was impossible to do and started to mangle the cap terribly. The center had to be cut out to salvage this metal and get this bent. It took a lot more work and copper to add the cupola design in the center, but I offered to do this at no additional cost.

These are photos of these roof caps in the different stages of fabrication with the cupola screened vent built in to the center of these roof caps. We designed the center cover to have a steeper 8/12 pitch made 22" wide to overlap the 9" wide vent hole.

Building the Cupola

We needed to determine how high to mount the center roof cover. We made 6" tall corner braces using a thicker 32oz copper to attach the center roof onto.

A 6X6 stainless steel screen is attached behind these columns held in place with 1/2" copper pipes before the roof top can go on.

This was designed in a way that to get in the vent hole even in a strong wind storm the rain water would have to get blasted through the screen hard enough that it would not fall before it managed a sharper angle than 60 degrees off to the side from straight down. I'm not saying it would be impossible, but not likely they would suffer even 1% water intrusion in the worst storm they are likely to encounter where they live, but a house on the Ocean Coast may need a better design.

Freight to Nevada

This shows the wood crate we build for each order with a hardwood plywood shell that is either glued and stapled, or screwed on the wood frame depending on if it is a side that needs to be removed for opening the crate. Our normal carrier Roadrunner does not service Nevada, so I had to use a different company called Mode Transportation to get these to them. It seems they were just a broker and just sent me to FedEx Freight.

Cost: $2,115 php
They saved around $800 for more copper used with the addition of the cupolas

Hello David,
We received the crate today, all in good order; the caps look great!; now Chris and I need to finish our re-roof projects and mount them on the tops. The caps will really make the buildings look finished in a fine fashion.

Thanks again for your good work,
Mike and Chris Allison
