Small Custom Awnings & Roof Covers Design & Fabrication Page
(20 different examples)

Updated 8 / 2023

Most all the work we do is custom to order, and here below are a few examples of the more custom sheet-metal and wood fabrication projects CBD has done to show our versatility of what CBD is capable to offer.  Even if your needs are different than what is shown on these pages, this shows how I am able to help brainstorm solutions, design, and fabricate nearly anything you may need.

These were local projects, but we do ship orders all over the Nation as well, so don't be shy. Write us an e-mail to ask if we can help with your special project. For a large project like shown on this page we may need to build the wood structure to mount the panels on to be sure they would fit just right, and ship the whole assembly ready to install.

The Acosta 10 Dormer Roof Cover Job: 20oz Copper
Central California. Completed 6/23

We are contracted to work on this house being built in central California for Cliff Acosta of Acosta & Daughters cabinetry. We are installing the gutters, and needed to make them a set of roof flashing, along with a way to cover all 10 barrel shaped roofs on their dormers. This is a $25.2k project w/o a crate or truck freight. That may seem like a lot, but this is just $2.5k for each set including the curved plywood to extend the roof out another 6" on all 3 sides.

Tara Branham had contracted with me to replace her old gutters with new 20oz copper gutters. She also arranged to have me rebuild her back awning, which was very poorly constructed.

We also made it 8' wider to cover the backdoor entry. I dare say we had made this frame over twice as strong as well.

The Hagberg Bay Window Roof Cover Job:/b> 8' wide 24oz Copper
Lake Oswego, Oregon. Completed 11/21

Nils Hagberg in Lake Oswego had me replace the shingles with this copper cover on their front bay window box with a thick 24oz copper and a tubular standing seam look. The whole project ran them $2.4k.

This front bay window box had no eaves or gutter, so I built up the roof wider, so the new roof would better cover some of these window frames.

Elbert & Janet Hendren in Kamiah Idaho back in August of 2019 had requested a quote for a copper roof cover for their bay window on the house they had built. There were some delays, so this was put off for a while. After working out all the details the cost for this made with a thicker 32oz copper was $8,157.40 w/o a crate or freight, since they came here to pick it up personally.

The Mughal Job: 8 doemers Covered with 20oz Copper
Northwest Portland, Oregon. Completed 8/20

These are the images I took within the process to share with my Client Usman Mughal in Northwest Portland when asked to evaluate the problems with his new tile roof. This new construction house should have been one the finest examples the Portland Metro area has to offer.

Mughal 8 pc. dormer Roof ProjectMughal 8 pc. dormer Roof Project

Sadly, this house has suffered some of the worst roof work I have ever seen in my travels over the last quarter century as a licensed contractor; with hundreds of drastic errors, sloppy workmanship, intentional fraud, and outright gross incompetence.

Mughal 8 pc. dormer Roof ProjectMughal 8 pc. dormer Roof Project

If nothing else, take this as an educational experience to help you avoid these sort of pit-falls with roofing work you may need done. If we do not stand strong in our convictions of demanding better workmanship, this industry will never change.

I also designed and made the several roof vents, made 3 chimney caps, replace their steel gutters with copper, and many more projects. We have been working on this roof on and off from 2016 to 2020.

The Pavlik/Martinez Job: 15' wide 24oz Copper Covered Bay Window Roof
Lake Oswego, Oregon. Completed 5/20

This is an interesting project to create this 2 tone look for the gutters and fascia boards. Marty Pavlik & husband Edward Martinezhad had contracted with me to replace their gutters back on 8/17, but it was not until 3/20 that I had finally cleared my schedule to begin work here on their house in Lake Oswego. They decided to add mitered end caps on the front gutters, 2X6 fascia and rake boards, with matching aluminum wraps over them. Also to cover their front bay window box with a thick 24oz copper. The whole project ran them $11.6k, but this larger copper clad roof was only $3.5k. We also built them a harwood deck and balcony the following year and I posted lots of photos of that project as well.

Pavlik/Martinez Gutter & Bay Window Roof ProjectPavlik/Martinez Gutter & Bay Window Roof Project

This front bay window box had no eaves or gutter, so I built up the roof higher, so the new gutter would not be dropped so low and cover some of these windows. These vertical beams are cut from 2X12 boards set only 16" apart, with a 2X6 fascia board and a wall brace covered with plywood. Building Code for any sloped roof structure is 24" centers under 1/2" chip board, so this is at least 60% sturdier than a standard roof before being covered with this thicker than standard copper.

Pavlik/Martinez Gutter & Bay Window Roof ProjectPavlik/Martinez Gutter & Bay Window Roof Project

Every board and plywood was assembled with coated deck screws. No nails. I even predrilled most of the screw holes so there was less chance of a split cracked board. I covered the plywood with the thicker 30# roof felt held in place with stainless steel staples. Then covered this with a thicker 24oz copper, which is 2X srtronger than standard 16oz copper used by most contractors.

Cost: $3,453 for this 15' wide roof cover installed

The Brodsky Job: Translucent White Entry Awning
Portland, Oregon. Completed 10/18

Matt & Irene Brodsky's house. Originally I was contracted by the Builder to design, build, and install a set of custom copper scuppers in the corners of this new construction out building for her office. Although, communicating with this contractor was very difficult, and they would not share what I asked with the Homeowners they were working for, so after over a year of this communication breakdown they finally released their hold and let the Homeowners deal with me directly to get this done the way they wanted.

These kinds of problems dealing with a General Contractor is a very common occurrence, so I HATE working as a sub for a GC, as it never seems to go well, but this was literally impossible to deal with them.

The wood frame is all cedar with 1.5" type L copper pipes for support. I made the corbels from scratch, designed to match their classic architecture.

I also covered their carport with the same twin-walled translucent white polycarbonate panels, which were 6' X 16' long. Then held them in place with clear cedar 2X2 boards that I also covered with copper.

Cost: $11.4k for those 2 awnings & 4 large copper scuppers w/downspouts installed

The a name="Kerans">Kerans Job: 44" wide 20oz Copper Covered Entry Awning
St. Johns, Oregon. Completed 8/16

This was built for Lisa & Curtis Kerans to cover their front entry. I to rebuild the whole wood frame, covered it with plywood, high temp Water & Ice Shield underlayment before the copper went on.

The clear cedar tongue and groove soffit was installed before the awning was attached and sealed with tung oil. The copper weight is 39.8#, which translates to 31.84 sq' of this 20oz copper, compared to the 26.92 sq' I had estimated. Here is the cost breakdown:

$1114.40 for the 31,84 sq' of 20oz copper to cover this
+ $260 to finish building this custom fit wood structure as described above.
+ $115.35 for the 7.69 sq' of cedar tongue and grove soffit treated with tung oil
+ $200 for delivery and installation
= $1,689.75 total

Cost: $1,689.75 for this 44" wide awning installed

The Azad Job: 6' X 24' Covered Entry Awning clad w/20oz Copper
Aloha, Oregon. Completed 8/16

This custom awning cover was designed and built for my Client Mahatasin Azad in Aloha. I started on this awning in August of 2016. Then continued this deck work in April of 2017. The cost of the awning was $1,901.25 total delivered and installed in a single seamless sheet of a 10mm twin wall frosted polycarbonate plastic over a cedar frame covered with 20oz copper.

After this project was finished they decided to have me rebuild their front deck as well with a set of diagonally cut ipe hardwood. I rebuilt the whole substructure as well and lowered the deck to add headroom from the gutter overhang. .

Azad awningAzad awning

This change just requires a single step up into the doorway. The cost for this deck work was $4,409.98 parts and labor with removal and disposal of the old deck part, which are being recycled. I also hauled off 75% of the tree trunk pieces cut down, but not hauled off by the tree service professionals. Also, I replaced the downspout and added another matching downspout on the right side for better drainage.

The Chavez Job: 20oz Copper Covered Concave Entry Awning
w/Turret Roof Cap & Finial
Beaverton, Oregon. Completed 2/14

This was built to cover the front entry. I made the whole wood frame, covered it with layers of 1/4" hardwood plywood, high temp Water & Ice Shield underlayment before the copper went on. It has thick 48oz copper bands screwed on with stainless steel screws, covered with small copper domes to look like large industrial rivets.

The clear cedar tongue and groove soffit was installed after the awning was attached and sealed with tung oil. The scroll work underneath was attached to a clear cedar 4X4. It was also made with 48oz copper with 10ga copper wide wrapped around the connections. These have little if any actual support. They are merely decorative.

Cost: $4.5k for this 80" wide awning installed

The Keller Job: 20oz Copper Concave Bay Window Cover
Vancouver, Washington. Completed 3/12

This was a project for Robert Keller. I built this to cover the existing bay window roof that was around 50 years old. This way there wasn't the added cost for removing the old copper roof cover, risking water damage in the course of our work, and replacing a lot of the siding that would get damaged in that extraction process, so he saved at least $1,500 that way and has a double layer copper roof that is a little better insulated now with a wider eve as well.

I added 6" eave to this to help better protect the windows below with a copper crown molding over the top and under this new cover. A cedar frame was also built to help support the added eve, which was treated with tung oil and attached with 16 deck screws. According to the final weight of the new copper here of 88# (w/o the wood frame) this cover required about 70.4 sq' of this 20oz copper to form this new cover.

This client also wanted to retain this new penny copper look, so he had us buff and lacquer the outside. That added $500 to the cost.

Cost: $3.7k for this 9' 3" wide cover installed

.

The Brown/Umberger Job: 20oz Copper Covered Concave Turret
in S. E. Portland, Oregon. Completed 2/12

This was built to cover the electric motor housing protruding up out the roof of their house after installing an elevator inside.

I built and covered this turret with copper. This was built at least twice as strong as house construction; assembled with glue and predrilled holes for the screws. It weighs about 1,500# in all.

Cost: $17k for this 8' wide turret installed

.

The Edwards Job: 20oz Copper Concave Cupola Roof Cover in Silverton, Or. Completed 11/11

This was to going be just a 4' wide base for this copper roof covered cupola, but before I began fabrication the client decided they wanted a 7' 3" wide base and were delighted with the results.

I covered this with smooth sheets of copper for a better seal and cleaner look than a standing seam cover you may be use to seeing. This was built at least twice as strong as house construction assembled with glue and predrilled holes for the screws. It weighed about 700#.

Cost: $8.2k for this 8' wide cupola installed

Arched Entryway Covered in 20oz Copper Scales back in 2011

This was to be just a simple copper roof cover for a local gutter client, but I suggested using these custom made diamond shaped copper shingles to add some textured character. It cost more than just a smooth copper cover, because it takes a little more copper with all these overlapping seams, but they agreed to give it a go and they were delighted with the results.

After stripping off the rusty steel cover I covered the roof with 1/4" hardwood plywood for a smooth surface. Then covered that with a high temp Water & Ice Shield underlayment before covering the very top and both lower flat sections with just a seamless sheet of copper for a better seal. Especially since it would not be seen from the ground anyway. I also lined the edge of this roof with a copper pipe trim.

Cost: $1,917.80 for the 30 sq' of coverage installed

.

The Gerber Job: 20oz Copper Arched Entryway Cover & Gutters 2007

This was just a simple roof cover I made for a general contractor: Wes Gerber Better Homes Design and Remodel Inc. 503-481-9332.

After I was done Wes confided with me how Montavilla Sheet Metal quoted $5k to $8k to make this copper cover. I was able to provide this along with the copper gutters and downspouts with assistance installing this cover as well for only $2k.

The first photo shows the new copper, and the next photo shows the aged copper after a couple years when I returned to replace the steel gutters.

The cost was $3,100 for the 155+ square feet of copper used to cover this arched entry roof.

The cost for the no-clog copper gutter system was $5,974.18.

The cost for the restoration of the 7' finial was $765

The cost for the 3 window well borders was $787.50

The Yocum Job: 16oz Copper Covered Arched Entryway & Gutters 2002

Here is the copper gutters and awning job we did for Dale Yocum's house that is just above the Metro Zoo, at 4343 S. W. Fairview Blvd. in Portland Oregon.  It was completed in August of 2002. Here is the before and after shots of the back patio area:

Above shows how I had to cut into the siding to fit the awning frame solidly in place, as well as to fit the copper roof flashing up under the siding, so it is sealed from the rain with the finished work and new copper gutters I installed.
