This was a custom copper kitchen exhaust hood cover I made for a client named Ronna Ueber in Vancouver, Washington. She had another carpenter make this wood structure. It is swell that it was so light at just 37.2#, but it was not built very sturdy. I would have used a hardwood plywood that was twice as thick and double layered it over the support frame held down with glue and screws, in stead of the tiny staples he used.

She first contacted me on 5/27/10 about this project. We worked out the details to cover this in 20oz copper with this rustic industrial look, and I received her 1/2 payment. Here is some of the before and after shots I got from this project.

The depth of this hood at the bottom was 16.5" and just over 76" wide. At the top it was 4.25" deep and 51.25" wide. The height up the back was 36", but with the concave curve up the front it took a pair of 20" wide sheets to cover that face with just 1/2" overlap and not extending it all the way to the top, where the crown molding goes.

I scored the underside of the copper sheets with 50 grit sandpaper and applied a thin coat of Gorilla Glue to each surface and set foam cushions over the sheet with 4 bags of concrete over them to hold pressure while the glue sets. You can see the crown molding attached along the top edge in these shots below. It was made from a K-5 gutter with the bottom slit in half longwise and bent upward for an attachment flange.

Below is some shots of the completed piece with the 2" wide bands of a thinner 16oz copper and the decorative upholstery tacks the client had picked out.

These 35 large tacks are a little less than 1" wide. Click on these photos to see a larger close-up to see the detail.

Cost Breakdown:
$1,047.20 for 37.4# of copper applied
$38.10 for the bag of 50 tacks
$1,085.30
total (no delivery)
