This copper chimney pipe
cover and cap projects is for my client Steve Fenley in Mulino,
Oregon. It is for their 8" stainless steel chimney pipe
that is stained with rust streaks from their old weather-head that
apparently was not stainless steel, nor the flashing flange below.

These are shots taken by the client
of his existing rusty flashing. After removing the roofing and
the rusty flashing collar he got these shots and detailed measurements
for me to build the new copper cover to fit over all this.

The inside of the base chamber of
the new copper flashing flange is 22" x 24". The outside of this
flashing flange is 34" x 36" for a 6" wide flashing all around. I
made it with a much wider base, so there would be no need for the
roof braces to hold the flue pipe steady in high winds. This new
cover has been in service for over 5 years now and no complaints
yet.

Here is the bottom flange with the center cut
out and tabs bent up to connect with the tapered support collar,
which is 24" tall at the lower base. The shot below shows the set up I made
to simulate the roof angle and an 8.5" wide plastic bucket in the center
at the right height to get the measurements for each side of the support
collar. This was trickier to work out the measurements than I had
imagined.

This shows the base flashing flange I made completed from 2 different angles.

|
This shot shows the octagon shaped flue pipe cover with
a tapered top to help shed water to the outside that might spray in through
the screen in high winds.

Then I made this copper support ring for the screen
to mount over this tapered top of the flue pipe.

|

I attached the 16 gauge stainless steel screen.
It is 12" wide and 9" tall.

I bent the top edges down at the angle of the
top cap and made a copper attachment ring.

Here is a few shots of the finished cap.

Cost for this project:
$600 w/o shipping or installation
Note: again I under bid this project
by $183 even at my lowest discounted rate of $25 sq' for this 39.2#
of copper and the SS screen, but I stuck the the price I had quoted.
Fortunately he was a very good
client to work with, so I did not mind. Here is the photos of the installed cover that
he sent me on 8/20/08:
